Build, Explore and Learn Through Structural Engineering
The SmartBrainz Geodesic Dome Construction Kit is a hands-on engineering project designed to introduce students to geometry, structural frameworks and practical construction techniques.
With a planned diameter of approximately 18 feet, the dome provides an engaging large-scale model for school STEM laboratories, engineering demonstrations and collaborative project-making activities. Its interconnected structural members demonstrate how geometric patterns can be used to create a three-dimensional framework.
The proposed design uses PVC struts with flattened ends secured using bolts and nuts. This fastening approach is intended to make the structure modular and allow its components to be assembled and disassembled, subject to the final connector design and prototype testing.
Key Learning Objectives
Students can explore:
- Geodesic geometry and triangular frameworks.
- Two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional structures.
- Measurements, ratios, angles and dimensional planning.
- Structural stability and the importance of interconnected members.
- Engineering design, prototyping and iterative improvement.
- Teamwork, communication and practical problem-solving.
How the Dome Construction Project Works
The dome is assembled by connecting individual structural members according to a defined geometric layout.
Each PVC strut is prepared to the required length, with its ends flattened and drilled according to the approved fabrication drawing. Bolts, nuts and any required washers join the members at their designated connection points.
The completed framework forms a three-dimensional dome-like structure. Students can study the arrangement of the members, identify repeating geometric patterns and examine how the configuration influences the shape and stability of the framework.
The final strut lengths, connection angles and assembly sequence must be established through a finalized geometric design and a tested prototype.
Educational Concepts Demonstrated
Mathematics and Geometry
Explore triangles, polygons, symmetry, angles, ratios, measurements and three-dimensional geometry.
Design and Technology
Understand material selection, fabrication planning, fasteners, prototyping and assembly procedures.
Project-Based Learning
Encourage students to plan, build, inspect, document and evaluate a collaborative engineering project.
Intended Applications
The dome may be considered for supervised indoor STEM demonstrations, mathematics activities, engineering workshops, design-and-technology projects and school science exhibitions.
Its final suitability for a particular room or venue depends on ceiling clearance, access routes, floor space, anchoring requirements and the completed structure’s assessed stability.
Safety and Supervision
This product is intended as an educational construction model. The proposed design must be evaluated and tested before use.
Assembly and fabrication should be supervised by a responsible adult. Cutting, flattening and drilling PVC members require suitable tools, eye protection and safe workshop procedures.
Package Contents
The final package contents will be confirmed after the engineering design and manufacturing plan are approved. The intended kit may include:
- PVC struts cut to the finalized specifications.
- Bolts, nuts and washers for the specified connections.
- A strut identification and assembly chart.
- Step-by-step assembly instructions.
- An educational activity guide.
Special tools, floor anchors, installation equipment and other accessories will be included only if explicitly specified in the final commercial package.
